Model chamber

The Model Chamber was founded in 1752 and contains many fascinating original models from that period. Exciting technical solutions and the occasional conundrum provide rare insights into 18th century engineering and ideology. These world-unique models are the basis upon which the Naval Museum was founded. 

Minesweeper Bremön

Outside the Naval Museum lies a real warship from the Second World War. This museum ship, the HMS Bremön, with most of its 1940s interior intact, is a great favourite among children and adults. Open to visitors in the summer. Inspect the commander’s bridge, look into the crew’s quarters, explore the machine room or view the mess.

Dristigheten (‘Bravery’)

The Figurehead Hall contains a wooden head painted in red which glares threateningly at visitors. It comes from the figurehead of Dristigheten, a ship-of-the-line which in 1790 stood up to the Russian fleet at the breaching of Viborg Bay. The story goes that the figurehead was so destroyed by gunfire that only the head section could be saved.

The sloops

The sloops is considered to be among the world’s oldest sailing boats still raced. The Naval Museum’s sloops have such beautiful names as Falcon and White One. In the 19th century these sloops were the great sailing ships of their day. Now, visitors can enjoy a sail in them several times a week each summer.

Underwater tunnel

Beneath the Naval Museum lies an 18th century wreck which you can view from the museum’s underwater tunnel. Once a ship-of-the-line, the wreck was filled with stones and sunk deliberately to consolidate the ground here. The tunnel also contains an exciting exhibition about marine archaeology: ‘Go to the bottom’.

HMS Västervik

When the Soviet submarine U137 went aground outside Karlskrona in 1981 the missile ship Västervik found itself in the centre of the drama, and the Soviet submarine captain was interviewed on board. Today this pawn from the Cold War waters belongs among our museum vessels. Follow along a guided tour onboard.

Dunder’s Deck

A place teeming with activities, challenges and possibilities for play with something for both adults and children. Dunder’s Deck includes the Ship Simulator where the slightly older children can try steering a ship, and the Sailors’ Workshop where children and adults can try their hand at seamen’s hobbies.

The Weapon Palm

In our entrance there is a ‘creation’ that has intrigued many a visitor over the years. It is the Weapon Palm created for the visit of King Carl XV to Karlskrona in 1860. The palm leaves consist of c .200 pistols and a few bayonets. The most modern weapons of their time displayed to impress a king.

The Royal Sloop

Built in 1844 the Royal Sloop has carried several kings and a German emperor and now lies in the Sloop and Longboat Shed beside the Naval Museum. A medium-sized open boat with stern, this sloop was last used in 1988 when it took King Carl XVI Gustaf on his ‘eriksgata’ (royal tour) of Blekinge.
