Figurehead Hall

Once they crowned Sweden’s most illustrious warships. Today these impressive wooden carvings from the period of the sailing ship hang in the Naval Museum’s splendid Figurehead hall.

The Figurehead Hall contains probably the world’s finest collection of figureheads and takes pride of place in the Naval Museum. These massive wooden sculptures which once sat on the stems of Swedish warships are several metres high and very impressive. Most uniquely the majority have been on ships involved in major sea battles during the years 1788-90 when Sweden was at war with Russia.

Figureheads by Johan Törnström

The majority of the figureheads were created in pine by the sculptor Johan Törnström (1744-1828) and ornamented ships with such fantastic names as Minerva, Fäderneslandet (Fatherland), Fröja, Camilla, Galatea, Försiktigheten (Prudence), Äran (Honour), Dristigheten (Bravery), La Badine and Carl XIII (Swedish king).

Visit the Naval Museum’s Figurehead Hall and be inspired and enraptured. Read about these monumental 18th century figures, study the careful carving detail and discover mended bullet holes from battles of former years. We promise you an experience you won’t easily forget.
