The Model Chamber

Models of ancient ships, clever constructions and beautiful ornamentation – this and much more awaits you in the model chamber, housing the exhibition which was the founding core of the Naval Museum.

The Model chamber of the Naval Museum was founded in 1752 by the ruling king Adolf Fredrik in order to preserve for the future the models that were built at Karlskrona Shipyard. The model chamber combines a mixture of ship models, mechanical devices and ornamentation, with art and architectural models.

These models were used for testing the operation of different ships and mechanical devices and for checking their finished appearance. The ship models were tested in a water tank to examine their performance in water. The tank was known as the ‘släprännan’ (release channel).

Original models from the 18th century

These models were used to test the qualities and technical solutions of different constructions before building on a large scale; just as we do today with powerful computers and advanced software. The models were also shown to the king so that he could give his approval before the men in the shipyards set to work.

Today you can see these unique and fascinating original models at the Naval Museum. Their exciting technical solutions provide rare insights into 18th century engineering and ideology.
