Women in the Defense Forces
Women have always been present in and around the Swedish naval defense, but throughout history they have been made invisible and anonymous.
Women were not allowed to fight, but they helped in many other ways. In addition to caring for the sick, they worked as telegraph operators, managed transport, and carried out other vital tasks that supported the soldiers' efforts. Many women were involved in the defense and navy through the Women’s Voluntary Defense Organization (Lottakåren). Since 1989, all positions within the Swedish Armed Forces have been open to both men and women.
The Navy – A Part of Sweden’s Defense
Sweden’s military defense consists of the army, air force, and navy. The navy is the branch of the Swedish Armed Forces responsible for protecting the country’s maritime and coastal areas.
Today, the navy consists of the fleet and the amphibious corps. The fleet’s surface vessels and submarines operate in archipelagos and along the coasts. The navy also participates in peacekeeping missions. Currently, over 4,000 people are employed in the navy.
